One of the most frightening points of the war between Russia and Ukraine is the nuclear power plants in Ukraine. At the beginning of the war, the possibility of an explosion similar to the accident in Chenobyl alarmed the whole world. The United Nations Nuclear Chief said the largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine was “out of control”.

UN Nuclear Chief: Ukraine nuclear power plant out of control

The United Nations draws attention to the importance of a possible accident at nuclear power plants. Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, warned Russian and Ukrainian forces that a possible nuclear accident could spell disaster.

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, who said that they wanted to visit the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, demanded that experts check the region to avoid a nuclear accident. However, for this, both Russian and Ukrainian soldiers need to create a security corridor.

Although the city of Zaporizhzhya is located in Ukraine, the region to which the plant is connected has been under Russian control since February 24. In his statement, Rafael Grossi said, “Every principle of nuclear safety has been violated at the power plant. The region is extremely serious and dangerous,” he said.

The UN Nuclear Chief said that the nuclear facility is located in an area where the war is actively going on and that nuclear security is endangered. He also underlined the need for inspections to ensure the protection of nuclear material.

Zaporizhzhya, about 522 km east of Ukraine’s capital, Kiev, is home to the largest of Ukraine’s 15 nuclear reactors. Researchers believe that a situation like the Chernobyl accident that occurred in 1986 could happen again.

Rafael Grossi said that the International Atomic Energy Agency is ready for cooperation. He also stated that they would like to hold a meeting with the authorities of both countries soon. Still, it is unclear whether Russia and Ukraine favor this cooperation.
