The vast majority of COVID-19 vaccines have been given to people living in rich or middle-income countries. Only 2.6% of the total number of vaccines made worldwide were made in Africa, and the shortage of vaccines in poor countries may cause the epidemic to last longer than necessary.
One of the top executives of the World Health Organization, Dr. Bruce Ayward stated that as long as poor countries cannot reach the vaccine, the epidemic will continue in 2022, and to prevent this, rich countries should withdraw from the vaccine queue.
“The pandemic will continue for one more year than necessary”
While vaccination rates have reached 40% in most continents, this rate in Africa is even less than 5%. One of the greatest proofs of this vaccine injustice in poor countries was presented by an alliance of non-governmental organizations called “The People’s Vaccine”. The organization found that only one out of every seven doses promised by rich countries reaches poor countries.
Commenting on the subject, Dr. Bruce Ayward used the following statements; “We really need to speed up, or you know? This pandemic will continue for another year more than necessary.” Ayward also stated that there will be no solution to this problem unless rich countries pull out of the vaccine queue.
