Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt has warned that the uncontrolled advancement of artificial intelligence could lead to a conflict of destruction unless mutually assured, not too different from the potential impact of the nuclear arms race that could have erupted in the Cold War.
Speaking at the Aspen Security Forum, Schmidt argues that global powers are not ready to negotiate on how to manage the incremental advancement of artificial intelligence. This, in turn, could lead to further weakening of trust between the two squabbling superpowers, such as the US and China, or even dragging them into conflict.
Referring to the power of information technology, Schmidt stated that geopolitical powers such as China and the USA should start talking about artificial intelligence regulation and form agreements on the technology. However, he stressed that it is currently unclear how such a negotiation will unfold, as both parties will need to bring in individuals with in-depth technical knowledge of AI and its potential future.
If a power, rightly or wrongly, begins to suspect that its opponent is developing AI autonomous weapons, then tensions may escalate and they may feel the need to have such weapons. This is all just a thought for now; however, Schmidt argues, this is a thought that the world should urgently consider before it is too late.
Schmidt is not alone in his warnings. Even Elon Musk, who is generally opposed to government intervention, has called for governments to further regulate AI.
