Microsoft has announced that it will add a free built-in virtual private network (VPN) service to the Edge browser to improve security and privacy. Cloudflare powered VPN service called “Edge Secure Network” is currently being tested and will be sent to all Windows users during the security update.

When Edge Secure Network is enabled, it will encrypt the user’s web traffic and internet service providers will not be able to see the information sent through the browser. Since the new feature will also use a virtual IP address, location tracking will not be possible. Thus, services such as Netflix or Hulu will be able to work in countries where they are blocked.

However, this service has one shortcoming, which is that it limits data usage to 1 GB per month. In addition, it will require logging into Microsoft account. This allows Microsoft to track who is actually using the VPN.

Users who receive the update will be able to enable VPN from the Secure Network section in Settings.
