Qualcomm introduced its new processors at its event today. The company has made it clear that it wants to bring 5G connectivity features to entry and mid-range devices and increase its weight in the market. It is said that these chips, which we will see in the devices in the US market initially, will also come to the European and Asian markets over time.

Qualcomm’s new 5G 4, 6 and 7 series processors announced

The Snapdragon 778 Plus, 695, 680 and 480 Plus processors introduced by the company today seem to ease the hand of smartphone manufacturers with chip shortages. Moreover, this new series offers much more than its predecessors in terms of both speed and connectivity. Therefore, in addition to the previous generations, it will force the hand of its competitors as well.

The new Snapdragon 778G Plus, Snapdragon 695 and Snapdragon 480 Plus models will have both 5G connection speed and 6GHz, the slower but reliable version of 5G. The company aims to bring 5G to all segments with these models. However, with the Snapdragon 680 model, it has made it clear that it does not give up on 4G.

Kedar Kondap, Vice President of Product Management at Qualcomm, made the following statement on the subject:

All these platforms are designed to add new options and provide increased performance and capabilities to our 7, 6 and 4 series. 5G continues to grow rapidly around the world. We see that the demand for 5G devices is also increasing.

Especially in the period of closure and remote working that started with the pandemic, the importance of communication resources has gradually increased. For this reason, the need for 5G has increased compared to the past. Because when compared to 4G, there is a speed difference between 10 and 100 times. In addition, it is expected to bring many improvements, from responsiveness to augmented reality, virtual reality and online conferences.

Features of newly introduced 4, 6 and 7 series processors

In recent years, Qualcomm has largely lost its influence in entry and mid-range devices. With the attack made by MediaTek, the company realized that it was late in bringing some features such as 5G to affordable phones. That’s why it plans to close this gap and even get ahead again by renewing the 4, 6 and 7 series processor families.

Snapdragon 695, the most striking model of the series, provides a performance increase of 15 percent with its Kryo 560 CPU and up to 30 percent with its Adreno 619L GPU compared to its predecessor 690. It is also expected to show high efficiency, as it is produced with 6nm technology, as in the 778G and 680.

The supported camera features also seem to have exceeded expectations. Offering 192 Megapixel support for a single camera in photo mode, the processor provides up to 32 Megapixels at 30 Fps for video mode. Today’s standards have been reached in the display features. It has 120Hz screen refresh rate and HDR10 support for Full HD resolution.

The Snapdragon 778G 5G model, which is expected to be a mid-segment star, also left its predecessor behind. The processor, which supports HDR10, HDR10 +, HLG and screen refresh rate up to 144Hz, offers support up to 4K. In camera features, it offers support for up to 192 Megapixels, like its little brother 695 in photography. In video, it can go up to 64 Megapixels at 30 Fps. It also comes with Kryo 670 CPU and Adreno 642L GPU.

The most budget-friendly model in the family is the Snapdragon 480 5G. Although it does not have 6nm production technology like its brothers, it comes with 8nm and manages to stay within today’s standards. As it comes with Adreno 619 GPU and Kryo 460 CPU, it is not as performant as others. However, major improvements have been made compared to its predecessor.

Offering support for photos up to 64 Megapixels, the processor also supports 120Hz screen refresh rate. In addition, while offering OpenGL and Vulkan support like its brothers, it also manages to provide the same standards in Bluetooth and Wifi ports. Therefore, it is not a disadvantage that it is not as fast and efficient as other members of the family. Considering that we will see it in the most affordable phones on the market, we can say that it is an advantage for those devices.
