e.Dams, one of the founding teams of the all-electric Formula series Formula E, has been sold to Japanese automaker Nissan. e.Dams, which Nissan first became a partner in 2018, has since represented the Nissan brand in Formula E.

While the details of the agreement between e.Dams and Nissan are kept secret, the Japanese manufacturer’s interest in recent electric projects does not go unnoticed. Here are the details of the new purchase that will change the balance in the Formula E series.

Formula E team e.Dams sold to Nissan

e.Dams, founded by Jean-Paul Driot for the all-electric Formula series; After Driot’s death, it was left to his sons Oliver and Gregory. The two partners, however, have divested from both the Formula E and Formula 2 racing teams of Dams.

Formula E is transitioning to new ‘Gen3’ regulations with the next 2022/2023 season, while Nissan wants to organize the team it partnered with in 2018 under the new rules. Ashwani Gupta, Chief Operating Officer of Nissan, said:

“When we decide to invest in Gen3 (the new sporting regulations), we gain complete control over every aspect of Formula E, including the powertrain as well as the racing team. we wanted to have. This project is an integral part of Nissan Motor.”

Ashwani Gupta also clarified some key points regarding e.Dams. He said that R&D operations will remain in France, but they will send a large number of engineers to France to work on this project. According to Gupta’s statement, the Japanese and French teams will transfer information to each other.

Japanese manufacturer’s investments in the electrification world are growing day by day. In 2021, it announced that it would invest $17.6 billion in the development of new electric vehicles and battery technology over the next five years.

Saying that it wants to develop 23 electric models by 2030, Nissan wants to catch up with its competitors in big markets such as the USA and China. The last Formula E step seems critical to the R&D of electric vehicles.
