American automotive giant Ford introduced the S650, the 7th generation member of the legendary automobile series Mustang, last month. This model, which has been completely renewed both inside and out, seems to upset those who like to modify cars and play with the settings of their engines.

Although Ford Mustang series is one of the favorite vehicle series of people who like tuning, it seems that this situation will end with the new generation. This is due to cybersecurity concerns.

Seventh Generation Mustang will come with encrypted system

The vast majority of newly released cars today are, to put it a bit exaggerated, wheeled computers. Almost every tool has software that it uses – even these softwares are updated from time to time. Ford will also use an electronic architecture called Fully Networked Vehicle (FNV) in the Mustang series. This means both good and bad news.

On the good news side, it will be possible to get new updates on the car, and the car will also be more protected against cyber attacks. In other words, it will be much more difficult for malicious people who want to enter the vehicle from the outside. Because the systems in the car will have complete end-to-end encryption.

On the other hand, in this case, it will not be possible to tune the vehicle. In particular, it will not be possible for people who tune with the electronic control system (ECU) connection to do such a thing, at least legally. For example, the vehicle’s turbocharger unit will be able to shut down the system due to unauthorized entry when it detects outside interference.

The once iconic muscle car is now becoming a digitalisation-advancing model. Displays built with Unity 4 have replaced the metal and plastic mix indicators used in the interior of the vehicle, and buttons have replaced the keys. Let’s see how Ford will balance this model.
