Apple’s upcoming M3 Ultra chip could provide an extremely powerful upgrade for Mac users, turning Apple’s computers into some of the best Macs the company has ever released, according to a new report.

Bloomberg writer Mark Gurman suggests this idea in his latest Power On newsletter. According to Gurman, the M3 Ultra could have an “extreme level of power” that could outperform PC rivals and anything Apple has produced in the past.

Gurman’s report notes that previous Apple chips had four tiers: Entry-level models, Pro, Max and Ultra models. The Ultra version typically has double the number of CPU and GPU cores compared to the Max chip.

The Max chip, the current most powerful M3 as we’ve seen in Apple’s latest MacBook Pro laptops, has 16 CPU cores and 40 graphics cores. If the M3 Ultra follows the same trend and doubles this number of cores, it could present the most powerful Mac chip we have ever seen with 32 CPU cores and 80 GPU cores. These numbers will be well above the M2 Ultra, which currently sits at the top with 24 CPU cores and 76 GPU cores.

If you want a best-of-breed Mac, the M3 Ultra can deliver outstanding performance for high-end tasks and will seamlessly complete almost any task you throw at it.

The CPU difference can be felt much more sharply when it comes to intensive tasks, as the biggest increase compared to the M2 Ultra is in this area. Processes like photo and video editing, code compilation, and mathematical calculations will all benefit from this CPU boost.

Of course, as one might expect, such power doesn’t come cheap. The M2 Ultra is only available on Apple’s most expensive Macs (Mac Studio and Mac Pro), the cheapest of which is the Mac Studio, which costs $3,999 in the US. However, if you need this kind of high power performance for your work, it will get you the results you want.

There is no information on exactly when the M3 Ultra chip will appear. Gurman only says we can expect Macs to carry the M3 Ultra “sometime next year.” The chip may be put to the test in the next few months, and these tests will reveal exactly what performance we can expect.
