The Oxford English Dictionary (Oxford Languages), which chooses a word every year as the “Word of the Year”, is making the public choose the word of the year for the first time this year. Voting has started among the three candidates for the word of the year 2021.
The words “metaverse”, “#IstandWith” and “Goblin Mode” are competing for Word Of The Year 2021. You can vote for word of the year using this link. Voting will continue until 2 December and the result will be announced on 5 December. Last year, the word “Vax” (vaccine) was chosen as the word of 2021 by lexicographers (lexicographers).

Metaverse technology is currently used for online events, online meetings and online games. With the development of Metaverse technology in the coming years, it is thought that we can do much more in the virtual world by wearing our virtual reality helmets. #IStandWith has become one of the most used English hashtags on social media this year. This word, which means “I am with you”, “My support is with you”, was used especially to support the people in the Ukrainian war. We have also frequently witnessed that it is used to support activist actions and against polarizing discourses. - Goblin Mode
Goblin Mode is a word that foreigners have been using recently on social media platforms, but we are foreigners. It is used to reject the stereotypes that society tries to impose. It means defying impositions and allowing individuals to behave however they want. It was frequently used and gained popularity by those who opposed the curfews implemented during the pandemic period.
