It’s not surprising that games win awards, but it’s pretty surprising that an award for literary works goes to a video game for the first time. Above all, the Hugo Awards reward the best literary works of science fiction and fantasy in a range of categories that have evolved since 1953. It’s the first time in history that a video game has been awarded a Hugo award.

Hades becomes the first video game to win the Hugo award

During the 79th annual Worldcon event, aka DisCon III, the winners of the Hugo Awards were announced. The aforementioned Hades won the Best Video Game award among the nominations for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Baseball, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, The Last of Us Part 2, and Spiritfarer. The Best Video Game category was included in the Hugo Awards for the first time.

As DisCon III co-chair Colette Fozard explained, “Since the start of 2020, most of us have spent more time playing games than we expected. “This award will give fans the opportunity to celebrate games that have been meaningful, fun and extraordinary in the past.” Fozard also noted that the Hugo Working Committee will be able to permanently add the Best Game or Interactive Experience category to the Hugo Awards.

Since its release, Hades has won multiple awards, including GDC Game of the Year and BAFTAs for Best Game, Artistic Achievement, Game Design, Narrative and Supporting Role (Logan Cunningham). With its art design, gameplay and role-playing elements, Hades managed to attract even players who do not like the rogue-like genre.
