Fixed a bug that caused old photos to be deleted on Twitter

The other day, we told you that Twitter, with its new name X, deleted 3 years of image data. All images shared between 2011 and 2014 were deleted for unknown reason. It was explained that this was caused by an error.

People thought this was to clean up the Twitter servers, but that’s not the case

The issue was first spotted by X user Tom Coates. Between 2011 and 2014, Coates found that images posted directly to the site were not showing, and links using Twitter’s built-in URL shortener were also lost.

“There was a bug that prevented us from displaying pre-2014 images over the weekend,” the company said on its Support account on Monday. No images or data were lost. “We fixed the bug and the issue will be fully resolved in the coming days.”

Before X responded, rumors began to spread about what was going on, with some people even suggesting that it was a sneaky move by the company to remove tons of old content to save server costs.

Among the images deleted due to the error was the famous selfie shared by Ellen DeGeneres during the 2014 Oscar Awards, which broke the record for the most retweets in a short time; however, it is currently the fifth most retweeted post of all time. That image is back too, she.

X has had quite a bit of downtime since Elon Musk bought the company for $44 billion in October 2022. After laying off more than half of its workforce, the company suffered a series of cuts, as well as confusion over the renewal of its verification system earlier this year.

While images and links were struggling at an event in March, the platform was also seen briefly last week slowing links to news sites critical of X since Musk’s takeover.
