Google has announced that Fitbit’s algorithm can detect atrial fibrillation (AFib or AF), an irregular heartbeat condition that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure, and other heart-related complications. and the Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it has received approval.
The company’s PPG(photoplethysmography) AFib algorithm was created with data from a study started in 2020 that enrolled 455,699 participants over five months. According to Fitbit, PPG detections were able to accurately identify AFib events 98% of the time.
