Although humanity has started to aim to set foot on Mars, the Earth we are on still hosts many unexplored places. Chief among these places is, of course, the depths of our oceans.

In the discoveries made to date, it has been seen that some fish species live even at depths of up to 7000 meters. Recently, the record for fish observed to live in the deepest point has also been broken. Scientists imaged a fish belonging to the Liparidae family at a depth of 8,336 meters.

Fish displayed at the deepest point:

The fish displayed in the Izu-Ogasawara Trench in the western Pacific belonged to the genus Pseudoliparis belyaevi. This fish species has been seen before at a maximum depth of 7,703 meters. With the new discovery, the species was recorded as the only fish species seen below 8000 meters deep.

Getting this image wasn’t easy at all:

The image we see above is the final product of 15 years of work by scientists from the University of Western Australia. The team lowered the bait we saw in the image into the ocean in September 2022. Among the baits were cameras that allowed us to see the image.

The team also dropped baits at 9,300 and 7,300 meters deep off the coast of Japan to discover fish that live in the deepest spots.

What does a person feel at a depth of 8336 meters?

If you wanted to go down to this depth of pitch darkness, you wouldn’t even be able to reach halfway. Until today, the maximum depth that a person can descend even with diving equipment has been limited to 332 meters. This record was set by Ahmed Gabr in the Red Sea in 2014.

The freediving record without using any equipment was set by Herbert Nitsch in 2007 with 253 meters.

If you managed to descend to a depth of 8336 meters somehow, for example, if you teleported to that point, you would be exposed to 12136.39 psi. That’s about 825 times the atmospheric pressure you’re exposed to when we go to the seaside.
