Last week, we shared with you the comments of the film critics who watched Spider-Man: No Way Home just before its release. Tonight, we are hours away from the release of The Matrix Resurrections, which will be the fourth movie in The Matrix series. This means a chance to read the opinions of people who are competent in cinema without any spoilers before watching.

The criticisms of the limited number of people who watched The Matrix Resurrections before it was released were published in Rotten Tomatoes. Although the film’s score from these critics was not bad, it was well below the new Spider-Man movie.

Comments on The Matrix Resurrections from Rotten Tomatoes critics (no spoilers):

Katie Walsh: She also invites the audience to have fun

“As well as revisiting this world that originally formed his career, Wachowski invites the audience to have fun and brings relentless enthusiasm to the ‘resurrection’ by giving his whole being to the text.”

Bill Goodykoontz: It was hard to follow

“Obviously, it was a little hard to follow at times. You have to let the movie flow and get swept up in this ‘quasi-religious savior mythology’. You find yourself either in or out of the plot. I personally found myself outside.”

Richard Roeper: They warmed it up and presented it again

“All in all, the movie felt more like a relaunched ‘tribute’ than a bold and fresh start.”

Meagan Navarro: Conflicts with the legacy of the series

“Resurrections clashes with the legacy of the series with an existential self-awareness. But this time, director and co-writer Lana Wachowski takes the work to a much more personal and emotional place, adding a surprisingly humorous twist to the mix.”

Charlotte O’Sullivan: Could have been a cynical attempt (!)

“This could have been a cynical attempt to get us out of money. Or just as bad a self-congratulation exercise. Wow! Look at Lana dodging those bullets!”

Peter Debruge: Neither better nor worse

“In short, Wachowski didn’t add much to the rich mythology he and his sister Lilly had formed. But he was too careful not to spoil her.”

Nick Allen: The weakest Matrix movie

“It was a ‘reboot’ with smashing philosophical gestures, grandiose episodes and slow motion scenes. But it was the weakest Matrix movie.”

Rotten Tomatoes critics apparently didn’t love the movie:

The Matrix Resurrections will be released in the US on December 22 and in the country on December 24.
