Months after the finalists were announced, for the first time in history, a game was awarded the Hugo Award. According to the news of Gizmodo, Supergiant Games’ game Hades became the first game to win a Hugo Award by eliminating some very strong rivals, including games such as Animal Crossing and The Last of Us: Part II.
Administered by the World Science Fiction Association, the Hugo Awards are considered to be very important in that they are generally considered a highly prestigious award for science fiction.
It is not yet known whether other games will be rewarded.
Released in September 2020, shortly before the Hugo Awards announced that they were planning a games category in November 2020; It came to PlayStation and Xbox consoles last August. Usually a fast-paced roguelike game, Hades was widely accepted by players thanks to its solid narrative element and mechanics that rewarded repeated gameplay.
Supergiant Games official Greg Kasavin is sorry for not being able to attend the awards in person on Twitter; however, he stated that he was extremely happy that his plays were deemed worthy of such an award and that the Hugo Awards finally gave an award in such a category.
Whether other games will also receive awards is a completely different issue, which is unknown for now. There are no apparent plans yet for the persistent games category; but over the years the Hugo Awards have evolved to take into account podcasts and video feeds. Considering that fantasy and sci-fi games have increasingly complex and in-depth stories, it’s not surprising that there will be a special long-term category dedicated to games at the Hugo Awards from now on.
