Wikipedia, which has been serving since 2001 with the slogan “Free Encyclopedia”, announced that it will enter the NFT business. Jimmy Wales, one of the founding partners of the platform, will convert the first version of Wikipedia into NFT and put it up for auction. Some of the money from the auction will be used for charities and some for the development of the social media platform “WT. Social”, which Jimmy Wales is working on.
The Wikipedia founder’s NFT project is more than just the site’s first entry. The iMac that Wales used to develop Wikipedia will also be put up for sale at the auction at Christies’ Auction House. Officials estimate that the auction will reach a million-dollar value. So, how was Wikipedia in the first place?
Here is Wikipedia’s first post in history
The first page to be auctioned off as NFT is just “Hello World!” consists of . However, the user who has this NFT will be able to change the page. This change, which will be valid for 5 minutes, will return to its original state at the end of the period.
By the way, it should be reminded that Wikipedia is actually a revival of a dead project. Wales originally tried to set up a peer-reviewed online encyclopedia. This encyclopedia, named “Nupedia”, could not reach the desired stage due to the fact that the approval of the regulations took too long. Larry Sanger, who stepped in at this stage, came up with the idea of collaborating on pages. That idea gave birth to Wikipedia.
