Humanity uses a lot of energy and a real energy crisis is posing a great threat. That’s why we continue to look for alternatives for green and renewable energy sources, and a “Sand Battery” technology is currently being developed.
This new technology is being developed by a company called Polar Night Energy (PNE) with the help of Western Finland-based energy use firm Vatajankoski. Their project will be the first of its kind in the world, but they are confident it will be successful, Pekka Passi, managing director of the Vatajankoski power plant, said in an interview with the BBC.
The idea behind the technology is pretty simple. Sand is a very good heat sink that loses very little heat and this heat energy that sand has is converted. In addition, additional heat is used, which is increased and wasted from other sources such as wind or solar generators, to heat the sand inside this sand battery. PNE says the sand can retain 500°C of heat energy for several months. The heat storage generally has 100kW of heating energy and 8MWh of energy capacity.
