After it was revealed earlier this week that Chelsea women’s soccer star Sam Kerr will feature on the cover, EA has also released the first trailer for FIFA 23 showing that women’s soccer will finally be a key part of the game. The game will include important tournaments of women’s football, with women also going to compete in both the 2022 Qatar World Cup and the 2023 Australia/New Zealand World Cup. In addition, women’s club teams from the best leagues in England and France will also find their place in the game.

International women’s teams have been featured in EA FIFA games since 2016, but this will be the first release available with club teams. Women’s soccer has gained popularity, in part thanks to the Olympics and other international competitions, and the 2022 World Cup will be a big boost. While two leagues are tiny compared to the dozens of leagues available for men’s soccer, it looks like EA plans to add more in future updates. “We are committed to creating a fair experience and aim to help women’s football grow,” said Matt Lafreniere of FIFA 23.

EA said FIFA 23 also offers cross-platform gameplay functionality and more “realistic” gameplay through the latest version of HyperMotion2 technology. This feature uses machine learning for motion capture data to create smoother player movements during gameplay.

FIFA 23 may be the last game to be named FIFA, as EA failed to agree with FIFA on financial and exclusivity issues. However, EA still has hundreds of licenses with over 300 football partners and holds exclusive deals with names like the Premier League, MLS, La Liga, Bundesliga and Serie A. The series will be renamed EA Sports FC in future releases.
