Speaking at the Mobile World Congress 2022 (MWC 2022), FC Barcelona President Joan Laporta stated that the club will launch its own NFTs and establish its own metaverse to attract new fans. He stated that this metaverse will hold together more than 300 million fans online.

“Developing Our Own Metaverse”

Joan Laporta announced that Barcelona has begun work on creating its own metaverse universe and launching a series of NFTs. Laporta said:

“We are developing our own metaverse, so we turned down the opportunity to partner with crypto companies. We want to create our own cryptocurrency. We have to do this ourselves. We are different because we survive financially thanks to our income from the sports industry. We don’t have giant companies or investors behind us. This forces us to be creative, innovative, bold and one step ahead in many areas of the sports industry.”

Barça Wants to Benefit from the International Market More Efficiently

The Catalan team plans to generate income from the club’s large number of fans around the world and thus strengthen its financial position . Laporta explained the global side of the cryptocurrency move as follows;

“This is something we can share with our 300 million fans around the world. I would like to give more details, but there are still points that should remain confidential. The players know that we are a modern club and we are trying to use the possibilities of the new media. Their contract contains clauses regarding the NFT world and the metaverse. We want to create new opportunities for growth. Our goal is to win trophies and delight our fans, but we also want to profit from opportunities in the sports industry. It’s a matter of survival.”
