The Winter Olympics, which was held in Gangwon, South Korea in 2018, returned again this year. The 2022 leg of the Olympics, which is held every four years, will be held in Beijing, the capital of China. While the preparations for the 2022 Winter Olympics, which will start on February 4 and end on February 20, continue, an important warning came from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

The FBI has issued a frightening warning that massive cyberattacks could occur during the 2022 Winter Olympics. With this warning, the Bureau recommended that athletes and other participants leave their personal phones and instead join the event with phones that they can use temporarily. The reason for this was potential risks such as data being compromised by cyber attacks. The FBI’s statement on the matter was as follows:

“Use temporary phone”

“The FBI urges all athletes to keep their personal cell phones at home and use a temporary phone during the Games. National Olympic Committees in some Western countries also advise their athletes to leave their personal devices at home or use temporary phones due to cybersecurity concerns at the Games.”

It’s actually quite normal for the FBI to warn about the cybersecurity threat at the Winter Olympics. Because during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the Olympics official service provider NTT Corporations announced that a total of more than 450 million cyberattacks were attacked during the event. But none of these attacks were successful thanks to security measures. The most popular methods used in the attacks were malware, email scams, phishing and fake websites and broadcast platforms.
