Half-Life 2 is getting a ray tracing remaster thanks to the efforts of the community modding team with support from Nvidia. The support that came to Portal first came to another pupil of the Source engine this time. There is currently no set release date. Nvidia announced the news as part of their pre-Gamescom presentation.
The remaster will use RTX Remix, Nvidia’s toolkit for bringing ray tracing to classic PC games. RTX Remix was previously announced, modeled after The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. RTX Remix aims to give Community modders and amateurs the ability to do ray tracing conversions for older games, but it’s still only available to a few people.
Modders in this community add modern Nvidia features like Full Ray Tracing (RTX) and DLSS to their games. They recreate the objects in the game with more geometric detail and physically-based rendering (PBR) features. This is a job that requires a lot of effort.
The short trailer where the mod was introduced for the first time shows only one area of the game, but it is an iconic area: Dr. Kleiner’s lab. Many Half-Life lovers have already remembered this place as soon as they see it. Although such mods sometimes diverge from the original of the game, according to the promotional video published, this job looks better than the others.
