Famous computer programmer and software developer John Carmack’s next goal is to achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI). While expressing that this is only a matter of time, Carmack underlines that the current artificial intelligence is developing rapidly in almost every field.

For those who don’t know, John Carmack founded id Software and became chief developer of Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake and its sequels in the 1990s. Carmack also founded Armadillo Aerospace in 2000, later working at Oculus VR, and now focuses on artificial general intelligence (AGI) with Keen Technologies, which he founded.

Conscious AI is only a matter of time

According to John Carmack, who explained important information in an exclusive interview with Dallas Innovates, it’s only a matter of time before artificial intelligence can simulate the human brain. Carmack states that all the materials needed to reach artificial general intelligence, that is, a conscious artificial intelligence, have now been collected. Now all you need is to make the cake with these ingredients. According to Carmack, the tools developed, the existing artificial intelligence models, and the accumulated knowledge are sufficient for a conscious artificial intelligence.

Carmack also underlines that the only obstacle to artificial general intelligence is consciousness. As in the example of turning the ingredients I gave above into cake, a “master” is needed, and according to Carmack, there is still a little way to reach that master for now. Because it is not yet fully understood what consciousness is or how it develops. So programmers can’t model it with software.

Carmack explains, “What we don’t have yet is some kind of consciousness. So never mind the human brain, we don’t even have things that can move like a mouse or a cat. But it feels like we’re very close to all these things.”

“We can reach in the 2030s”

He also says that current artificial intelligence has not reached a cognitively walking child. There are tricks, techniques and strategies that the brain can do but none of our current models do. But getting to that point doesn’t seem out of reach for me. I think this is essentially inevitable.”

Carmack likens the current situation to his 3D video games. Carmack states that even if he didn’t do it himself, there will be 3D games eventually, but he just pushed the situation forward. According to the famous name, conscious artificial intelligence will probably be reached in the 2030s. When we reach these years, the famous software developer says that the artificial intelligence industry will be worth trillions of dollars.

As we mentioned in our previous news, big technology companies are currently investing in artificial intelligence faster than ever before. Microsoft has formed a partnership by investing billions of dollars in OpenAI behind ChatGPT. Microsoft is adding artificial intelligence to its products, including the Bing search engine and the Edge browser. Likewise, Google says it will strengthen its rigging engine with its artificial intelligence tool Bard.
