American world-famous singer and Grammy-winning songwriter John Legend has joined the world of NFT with the music and art NFT platform OurSong.
Officially presented as a “social trading platform,” OurSong allows users to create NFTs (called “Vibes”), monetize fan communities through access to private chat rooms and unreleased music.
OurSong differs significantly from many NFT platforms in that it does not require users to have external cryptocurrency wallets. Instead, digital fan cards purchased from OurSong are stored in the app itself, giving users access to “clubs” based on their card’s privileges. The app allows users to bid directly on Vibes in USD; This simplifies the experience for users unfamiliar with crypto by allowing OurSong to be subsequently converted to Ethereum and exchanged for an ERC20 token.
The app also allows the user to create NFTs directly from their phone, reinforcing the app’s desire to keep the experience fully mobile.
Legend will serve as Chief Impact Officer, who is expected to use his platform to attract new fans and artists. He is joined by Chris Lin, who runs Taipei-based digital music service KKBOX, Twitch co-founder Kevin Lin, and former Senior Vice President of Warner Music’s Asia Pacific division, Ken Cheung. While Legend has made several notable investments in the past (most appropriately the interactive streaming platform Adventr), this will be his first foray into any Web3-based business.
Currently, the app appears to only have a Chinese user base, but the addition of Legend could help with marketing to Western audiences. The artist and other founding members refuse to provide financial details about the project.
