READING NOW Fake Threads App in App Store Has Been Removed! (Even though it’s a little bit overdue…)

Meta made a big move against Twitter on July 5th and released its text-based social media platform Threads. Although the platform managed to reach millions of active users in its early days, it lost its momentum in the following days.

While the whole world is focused on the competition between Twitter and Threads, this opportunity has become the new tool of malicious people. Fake apps named “Threads” have been uploaded to app stores. If it was about one of them, the expected development took place.

Apple has removed the fake Threads app from the App Store:

One of the fake apps called “Threads for Insta” was finally sanctioned. According to Sensor Tower data, the application, which has been downloaded by more than 300 thousand people to date, has been removed from the App Store, albeit a little late.

The fake application in question was specifically targeting European users. Unaware that Threads hasn’t been released in Europe yet, many European users downloaded the app, mistaking it for real or an alternative.

With these downloads, the app became one of the most downloaded apps on the App Store in France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden and a few other European countries, reaching the top spot. In addition to removing the app, Apple also removed all the developer’s other apps from the store, banning the developer in the App Store.

The fake app that was removed from the App Store doesn’t look like Threads or any social media platform, it wasn’t even a platform. A bot that generates post texts was integrated into the application.
