A few days ago, the existence of a fake website impersonating AMD’s site was discovered on Reddit. After an ordinary user searches for “amd driver” on Google, the fake site appears to be in the first place in searches.

Of course, the first link in searches is not a link indexed by the Google search engine algorithm. Instead, the fake site sitting in the first search result field is just an ad. But it’s a very well-crafted sneaky ad. Because it is a very realistic imitation. It seems highly probable that an unaware user will be caught by this fishing rod.

Fake sites are a click away

According to multiple sources, the suspicious .exe file downloaded from this site also has a realistic-looking name such as “Auto-Detect and Install Driver Updates for AMD Radeon Series Graphics and Ryzen Chipsets”. Of course, this is nothing new. Today, there are sites that imitate the official sites of popular brands almost imperceptibly. They just want to take advantage of your momentary distraction.

Google has already removed this fake site. But Google is not the only search engine with this problem. For example, Microsoft Bing has a similar scenario. In addition, Google or others do not seem to use any protection or preventive algorithms. The only way to remove these ads seems to be to report them for now. Therefore, it all ends with the end user. You can take these three steps to protect yourself:
  1. Always check the address of the link you clicked.
  2. Scroll down the list of results.
  3. Do not click on results labeled as ads.
