Facebook’s Bitmoji style avatars are popularly used on Instagram and Messenger. And now this option is also coming to WhatsApp. According to the news of WABetaInfo, WhatsApp started testing customizable avatar support on a limited number of users with the 2.22.23.9 beta.
Those who have access to this feature will see a new “Avatar” category in the settings menu that they can use to customize the digital version of themselves. Just like with Meta’s other apps, WhatsApp then creates a sticker pack with different poses for this avatar, and users can use these stickers to express themselves while messaging.
It is unknown if WhatsApp will roll out this feature to all Android users or if it is considering bringing it to iOS. Meta has not made any statement on the subject.
Meta avatars were first introduced in Messenger and News Feed in 2019, and they became available in Facebook comments and stories in 2020. Earlier this year, the company gave its avatars a new 3D look and began allowing users to add them to profile pictures and story posts. At the time, Meta’s general manager for avatars and identity, Aigerim Shorman, stated that he was considering the update as part of Meta’s efforts to advance the idea of the metaverse, not just virtual content.
