Hüseyin Yayman, Chairman of the Parliamentary Digital Media Commission, made a statement on the subject. It reminded me of the 6-hour crash in Facebook services. Emphasizing the importance of domestic applications once again, Yayman said, “Connection problems on WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook platforms really point to a problem that we need to focus on.”

Commission Chairman Hüseyin Yayman stated that there is a concern about personal data regarding the collapse in the world. Also, referring to social media platforms, “Is there a leak in these applications? Is there another problem here?” Saying, Yayman continued his words as follows:

In fact, what came to our minds during the crisis on October 4 was the following; ‘Has this personal data been stolen? How important is the protection of personal data? Is there a leak in these apps? I wonder if there is another problem experienced here?’ Sensitivity was very important and we experienced this problem once again. Here, we once again understood the importance of protecting our personal data from domestic applications.”

Hüseyin Yayman pointed out that social media platforms lead to the rapid and uncontrolled spread of unfounded information. In this context, he emphasized that the public order has been disturbed. Yayman continued his statement as follows:

Although these platforms provide the opportunity to share information and receive news, the rapid and uncontrolled presentation of unconfirmed information, especially by social media users, leads to problems that lead to the fact that unfounded information sharing is seen and re-shared by millions of users, and ultimately disrupts public order. We insistently brought this up at every meeting.

Hüseyin Yayman, who stated that they mostly focused on the protection of personal data, concluded his statement as follows:

“Our commission is long and the point that the Turkish Grand National Assembly puts the most emphasis on; is the protection of personal data. We see and experience once again that it is important for us to walk the path in unity and solidarity against the transnational companies that want to take our democracy and our politics hostage, both by protecting our democracy and by maintaining the freedom-security balance.”
