We already knew that Meta-owned social media apps (Facebook and Instagram) would start copying TikTok. The social media giant now wants to switch to a design similar to Discord for Facebook. The resulting image for Facebook groups shows that it will use a Discord-like sidebar.

Facebook groups all over again: Audio room, channels and post

The sidebar that Discord users have been familiar with for years is finally coming to Facebook. Test images shared by Meta show that Facebook groups will be lined up on the left side. Meta’s preference for the purple color in Discord’s logo increases this similarity even more.

The test image that Meta shared of the new Facebook design revealed that each group’s icon will be lined up on the left with rounded edges. The new interface will align conversations and groups in a single sidebar, just like in Discord and Slack.

Navigating multiple features like groups, Messenger chats, and events will be easier in the left-justified sidebar menu. Also, similar to Discord, it is possible to pin groups to the top.

In fact, we can say that Facebook has changed the function of groups with the new design. You will be offered the opportunity to share posts within a single group as channels, chat rooms, voice rooms or the classic group feature. It should be reminded that all other features are available in Discord, except for post sharing.

All these design changes came after Facebook announced that it would “follow in the footsteps of TikTok.” The update, which will be shared by Facebook soon, will make it possible for Meta to compete with all its competitors again.

The designs in the screenshot shared by Meta can be used by a certain user group for now. But a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement that the new groups will be open to everyone in the coming months.
