A new cloud-based game streaming services pioneered by Microsoft and NVIDIA came from Facebook. The social media giant, which launched its own service in beta last October, currently hosts more than 25 games. However, Facebook does not have as much of an active role in the cloud gaming market as its competitors. It continues to exist with smaller and free-to-play content instead of big games like on consoles.
The project, called Facebook Gaming, was only available on Android and the web until now. The officials who want to bring the system to the Apple ecosystem gave good news for iPhone and iPad users.
Facebook cloud games are finally coming to iOS.
Jason Rubin, Facebook’s VP of Games, talked about the company’s future goals for cloud-based streaming services. He stated that they see this system as a way to offer instant access to those who want to play cross-device games at all times. He added that people see the games in the Facebook library in addition to other HTML5-based games.
Facebook has been able to seamlessly launch its cloud-based gaming service on Android and the web. However, due to the strict rules Apple applied in the App Store, it could not be opened to the iOS ecosystem. Touching on this issue, Jason Rubin stated that they will eventually make the streaming service available to iPhone users. However, he did not give detailed information on what method they would follow.
Updating the App Store Application Monitoring Guidelines, Apple wants to dominate the developer of the game streaming service. Saying that each game’s update must be submitted for approval in advance, Apple also obliges subscription transactions to be done with its own infrastructure. Microsoft, which did not accept this process, found the solution in the browser. Xbox Cloud Gaming managed to offer its games to iPhone and iPad users via Safari.
At this stage, Facebook has no choice but to follow a similar strategy to its rival. It will likely take advantage of Safari to bring its games to iOS and iPadOS. Of course, it will still be free.
