Apple’s Face ID system, which produces a 3D model of the face and performs authentication, has been in use for 5 years. Face ID, which is used both for unlocking the iPhone and for shopping in digital services such as the App Store, cannot be easily repaired in case of a possible breakdown.
Face ID requires a complete replacement of the screen or case before it can be repaired. The reason for this is that the components of Face ID, including the front camera, are integrated into the iPhone. As a matter of fact, even if there is no defect on the screen, just because the face recognition system is broken, replacing it returns as an additional cost.
The new era in Face ID repair
According to the information provided by MacRumors, technical services in Apple Stores and Apple’s authorized service providers will now be able to access the TrueDepth camera section. This means that the front camera and other modules that keep the Face ID system working properly can be repaired independently.
Technical services will first determine whether the Face ID unit needs to be replaced via Apple’s Vehicle Service Kit. Then the necessary action will be taken.
As it is known, Face ID first entered our lives with the iPhone X, which was introduced in 2017. Since then, it continues to be used in flagship iPhone models. However, according to the shared information, only the Face ID module of the iPhone Xs and later series, introduced in 2018, can be repaired. The iPhone X will be deprived of this support.
Will iPhone repair fees decrease?
With Apple’s new decision, it will no longer be necessary to completely replace the iPhone’s screen or case to repair Face ID. Therefore, since the additional costs in the repair process will be eliminated, it is estimated that the repair prices will also decrease.
