Since the day augmented reality technologies entered our lives, we better understand the impact of the world of science fiction on the future. Working on this subject, Leap Motion is working on a new augmented reality technology called Project North Star. The new product, which comes with a kind of virtual reality glasses, enables users to reach augmented reality with software support. They can move objects using only their hands.
Project North Star was not designed primarily as a consumer electronics product. The product is currently available as a developer-only edition, with a $100 tag. The company also releases open source software, allowing developers to produce applications for North Star.
Videos recorded by a developer show initial results from North Star:
There is a 3.5-inch LCD screen on the glasses, and its image is projected onto what the user sees as a transparent glass. Leap Morion says the viewing angle of the goggles is much more advanced than existing systems.
The company’s biggest rival is Microsoft, which has been the only one in its field for years with HoloLens. Being an independent design and opening the platform to developers makes it more usable.
Detection of hand gestures is something we are already used to in the world of augmented reality with sensors. Let’s see if Leap Motion will be able to reach the desired points where it is positioned to be the Android of the AR world. Frankly, it looks like a very successful business at first glance.
