Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 looks like it will be Qualcomm’s first smartphone chip to move away from traditional CPU designs. While it has already been officially announced that Orion cores will be used in Snapdragon chips in competition with Apple, the details now revealed shed light on the core configuration.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is being detailed

Latest information suggests that Qualcomm will adopt the same CPU cluster as MediaTek’s Dimensity 9300, which means we may no longer see low-power cores in the upcoming silicon. It has been known for some time that both the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 and Dimensity 9400 will be produced on TSMC’s 3nm process, and more specifically the Taiwanese manufacturer’s ‘N3E’ process.

However, a reliable source called Digital Chat Station has shared more details for ‘Sun’, the codename of next year’s flagship silicon. It is stated that the chip will use the ‘2 + 6’ configuration as the CPU cluster, and after two high-performance Phoenix cores, six midrange cores of the same name will be on the chip. With performance-oriented cores, Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 can reach surprising power compared to the previous generation.

Of course, it is unclear whether this move will be a reality, but the lack of efficiency cores raises questions about energy consumption. Since TSMC N3E will be a more mature and efficient version of the manufacturer’s current 3nm process, it may be possible to close this energy gap. All this information shows that Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will be worth the wait, but with the transition to custom Orion cores, the price of the new chip will also increase. This means additional costs for customers and smartphone consumers.
