The Nepalese government is considering relocating the Mount Everest base camp to a different location, as global warming and human activities have made the current location unsafe. The reason for this thought is the melting of the Khumbu glacier, where the camp is located.

In general, the rapid thinning of the glaciers on Everest also poses many risks such as avalanches. The situation in Khumbu glacier, which is one of the glaciers on the mountain and includes the main camp, is getting worse day by day. The main camp, used by up to 1,500 people during the climbing period, is at an altitude of 5,364m .

Khimlal Gautam, a member of the committee that proposed the idea, told the BBC : “For example, we saw people urinating about 4,000 liters every day in the base camp. Also, the large amounts of fuel we burn there for cooking and heating, such as kerosene and gas, will definitely have an impact on the glacier. ” said.

In the statements made, it was stated that the current location of the new location of the base camp will be outside the Khumbu glacier at a level between 200m and 400m lower . The government, which will also hold talks with the local people who may be affected by the displacement, said that if the plans are followed, the change can take place until 2024 .
