It’s actually surprising to see that Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA V) is almost 10 years old now and still dominates the third console generation. But why do people still pay and continue to play this 10-year-old game?
Of course, there are other games like League of Legends that are similarly successful and continue to be played, but when GTA V was first presented, its purpose was not to live for that long. We can say that GTA Online is a game you play in 2013 when you want to have a bad day in Los Santos with its repetitive missions and lost data. It took many years for the game to reach an impressive position.
But despite all the years that passed, GTA V for PS5 went on sale in many different countries and once again started a huge buying trend. There seems to be no big secret behind this great success of GTA V. Instead, the single player game mode has many different minor features that reflect much better than other options that have been available for a long time.
It has only recently been used by other Rockstar’s AAA competitors that supporting characters stop speaking when hindered by events in the open world and then naturally return to the beginning of their sentence and continue to speak. Other open world games still don’t have the convincingly uneven road surfaces of Los Santos. In addition, cinematic scenes start almost without you noticing during the game and progress naturally with impressive camera movements.
All these details are not enough for a game to survive competitively for a long period of 10 years. But the fact that GTA V is packed with so many of these little details gives it a tremendous advantage over almost any open world rival. The number of these details is so great that we can easily say that there is no competitor that has managed to use all of them in their own games yet. Of course, the biggest influence in all of these details is definitely Rockstar’s almost endless budget and unique history in open world games. That’s why GTA V, which should have been obsolete even when PS5 and Xbox Series X / S were released, still managed to stay at a level that could challenge its rivals.
However, we can easily say that the success of GTA V will not last forever. It’s likely that Los Santos’ age will begin to reveal itself soon. But hopefully, by then, GTA 6 will be out and the catch of its rivals will begin again…
