It has started to emerge that the Metaverse, which has been making the headlines a lot lately and which is thought to be very interested by everyone, is actually not what it seems. The virtual universe is considered as an immature project, at least for the time being. The situation is not much different for the digital metaverse created by the European Union by spending about 387,000 euros. Because only 6 people came to the celebration party of this virtual universe! Journalist Vincent Chadwick went to this party and revealed that his virtual avatar was almost completely alone.
Global Gateway’s Metaverse universe was launched in mid-October with the intention of becoming a “digital space where people dressed as balloon animals can meet and “reflect on global issues and make a difference worldwide.” It is reported that the European Commission’s foreign aid department has spent 387,000 euros to develop the virtual world.
It is also said that some names in the department are not happy with this decision. This project is depressing and embarrassing, a foreign aid worker told Chadwick. He also describes the digital universe as “digital garbage”.
Twitter users weren’t too kind to the European Commission, either. One sustainable agriculture researcher asked, “Seriously? There is a great drought in East Africa, there is not enough food and not enough funds for UNHCR refugees in the camps. And you’re spending money on that?” he wrote.
An EU spokesperson told Devex that the target audience for the Global Gateway metaverse project is people aged 18-35 who describe themselves as neutral on the EU and are not particularly interested in political issues. Ultimately, the aim was to attract and “engage interest” these young people through social media and “raise awareness of what the European Union is doing on the world stage”.
