European Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton warned American businessman Elon Musk that the social network Twitter must comply with EU content moderation rules. Otherwise, the social network will face fines and even blocking in much of Europe.
Time to change on Twitter
Breton told the British publication “Everyone is welcome, but on our own terms. Elon, we welcome you, but your rules will not apply to us,” he said. In other words, he told Twitter’s new owner directly that there is no complete freedom of speech in the EU. Musk, on the other hand, said the other day that “freedom of speech is the foundation of a functioning democracy” and described Twitter as “a digital city square where issues vital to the future of humanity are discussed”.
Twitter can be banned in Europe if it does not comply with the law
European Commission representative Thierry Breton stated that Musk’s failure to comply with the provisions of the new Digital Services Law could lead to sad consequences, and used the following expressions: “Anyone who wants to take advantage of our market area “There are sanctions if Twitter doesn’t comply with our laws. Like 6% of the company’s revenue being confiscated and banning the platform from operating in Europe if violations continue.”
The Digital Services Act requires social networks like Twitter to explain to regulators how they deal with disinformation and military propaganda. Basically, Twitter will not be able to determine what disinformation and military propaganda are and what should be banned. Of course, the new law applies not only to this social network, but also to other tech giants such as Facebook and Google.
