The European Commission is preparing to allow searches on flights. With the spread of 5G connection technologies in the continent, the European Union; It will allow calling, messaging and internet use on flights.

Part of its mobile spectrum will be dedicated to connections on flights

“The sky is no longer the limit when it comes to the possibilities of super-fast, high-capacity connectivity,” said EU Commissioner Thierry Breton, announcing that mobile connections will soon be available on flights. The European Union has taken steps to make phone use easier on flights before, but in 2022 only Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections are still allowed on flights. However, with the new rules, a special area in the spectrum of both 5G connection and previous generation mobile connections will be reserved for flights, so calling, messaging and internet use will be possible on flights.

Speaking to The Telegraph, the International Air Transport Association stated that the in-flight 5G connection uses a different frequency than the cockpit connections, so this will not cause any security problems. According to the new standards, mobile devices for in-flight 5G will operate in the 5GHz spectrum, while aircraft’s own communications will take place in the 4.2-4.4 GHz range.

Unknown when it will be available

For in-flight 5G connections, a special base station equipment will be placed on the planes and the devices on the plane will be connected to this base station. The base station on the plane will also be connected to standard base stations via satellite connection, so mobile connections will be possible on flights. Although the new standards of the European Commission will make many people happy, it is not known when this standard will be available.
