The recent advancement of generative AI has resulted in it often being difficult, if not impossible, to tell whether something you see on social media is real or machine-generated, and that’s not a good thing. The EU is urging social media companies to start tagging AI-generated content and images to combat fake news and disinformation from Russia.

Artificial intelligence disinformation on social media

“Companies that integrate productive AI into their services, such as Bing Chat for Microsoft and Bard for Google, need to take the necessary measures to ensure that these services are not used by malicious actors to generate disinformation,” said Vera Jourova, Vice President of the European Commission.

“Parties with services that have the potential to spread AI-generated disinformation (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Google, etc.) should implement technology that will recognize such content and clearly display it to users,” Jourova added.

The EU is clearly asking companies to introduce tagging that users can clearly see when browsing social media and being distracted by other items in their feeds. Jourova said that she met with Google CEO Sundar Pichai 10 days ago and asked if his company had the technology to detect fake news, and the answer was “Yes, but we continue to develop technologies”. It seems that in the future, the EU seems to take stricter steps in this regard and aims to ensure that its demands do not remain only in words.
