European Union officials discussed additional measures to make AI tools like ChatGPT more transparent to the public.
Vera Jourova, vice-president for values and transparency at the European Commission, said on June 5 that companies using artificial intelligence tools that have the potential to generate disinformation should put labels on their content to combat fake news.
Jourova: Security Measures Should Be Taken Against Disinformation
Jourova also cited that companies that integrate productive AI into their services, such as Bing Chat and Bard, should establish security measures to prevent malicious actors from using them for disinformation purposes.
In 2018, the European Union created the Disinformation Code of Practice, which serves as both an agreement and a tool for players in the technology sector on self-regulatory standards to combat disinformation. Big tech companies like Google, Microsoft and Meta have already signed the Disinformation Code of Practice. But Jourova said these companies must report on new protection measures for AI next July.
Jourova also emphasized that Twitter is pulling out of its enforcement rules, noting that the company should await further scrutiny from regulators.
