Ethereum core developer Tim Beiko has announced that they are planning an update to Shapella (Shanghai/Capella) on February 28.
The update, which will be performed exclusively on the Sepolia network, will take place during the 56832 Epoch. The upgrade for the Goerli network will take place in March.
Shanghai and Capella are the names of the upcoming Ethereum hard fork. Shanghai is the name of the fork on the execution client side. Capella is the name of the consensus layer client-side upgrade.
There Will Be A Major Upgrade After The Merge
Some of the key Ethereum improvement offerings (EIP) changes in the execution layer include Warm Coinbase and Beacon Chain withdrawals. Withdrawals will pave the way for validator withdrawals from the token chain to the EVM via a new system-level transaction type. On the other hand, Warm Coinbase may reduce network fees for some key network participants, called founders.
Every new transaction on the platform needs to interact with the Coinbase software more than once. The first interaction costs more as the software needs to warm up, and then the fees decrease as the interactions increase. However, with the launch of the EIP-3651, the Coinbase software will initially remain hot, thus requiring a lower gas fee to access it.
Significant changes to the consensus layer include full and partial withdrawals for validators, and standalone state and historical accumulators that replace original singular historical origins.
Partial withdrawal means that validators can withdraw ETH. In case the validators want a full withdrawal, the validators can exit outright and abandon the verification process, receiving 32 ETH rewards.
This upcoming upgrade will enable validators to withdraw their staked ETH from the Beacon Chain to the execution layer. Also, the upgrade will bring changes adding new features to the execution layer and the consensus layer, making it a major upgrade after The Merge.
However, stakers operating nodes need to upgrade their nodes to the latest Ethereum client versions to take advantage of the Sepolia upgrade. Following the deployment of the Sepolia upgrade, the next step will be the Shanghai upgrade, which will take place on the Ethereum Goerli testnet, which is expected to launch in March.
