Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin spoke about the events in Canada. Buterin told protesters that efforts to block the flow of funds show why cryptoassets exist.
In an interview held at the ETHDenver conference, Buterin also spoke about events in Canada. Buterin, who grew up in Canada, described the government’s response to the protests as extreme, saying that cryptocurrencies offer a hedge against such extremism:
“If the government is not willing to comply with the law … [and] give people a chance to defend themselves.” If it gives a chance… and they just want to talk to the banks and basically cut off people’s livelihoods without legal process, this is an example of how decentralized technology is there to make this kind of excess difficult.”
Buterin says that cryptoassets as such are restorative/corrective rather than radical, emphasizing the danger of using banks to stop protesters:
“It’s not about being illegal. In some ways, it’s about restoring the rule of law. Governments and police can still act legally and pursue suspects “as always” without commissioning financial intermediaries… The idea of chasing middlemen and using middlemen for all this is dangerous.”
