According to a blog post by the Ethereum Foundation, the “Bellatrix” upgrade will be activated on September 6 as part of the Ethereum Merge. Next, the Ethereum mainnet Merge will take place between September 10 and 20.
Merge aims to migrate from the existing Proof of Work (PoW) mechanism of the Ethereum blockchain to the Proof of Stake (PoS) model, which is believed to be a faster, more energy efficient and safer way to scale projects. Ethereum has completed a series of work to convert the testnet to PoS and will move the mainnet to PoS.
One of Bellatrix Merge’s Steps
The Ethereum Foundation’s blog stated that the Ethereum mainnet Merge will happen in two steps, the “Bellatrix” and “Paris” upgrades. The Bellatrix upgrade puts Ethereum’s consensus layer ready to merge with the Beacon Chain, which introduced the PoS mechanism to Ethereum.
The Bellatrix upgrade will occur on epoch 144896, which means it’s on September 6. Epoch is the unit of time used in Ethereum.
The Paris upgrade will come after the Bellatrix upgrade, which will switch the Ethereum network from PoW to PoS.
The Paris upgrade will be triggered when the “Total Terminal Difficulty” (TTD) reaches 58,750,000,000,000,000,000,000. TTD stands for the threshold difficulty of the last block mined in Ethereum before Merge. After the TTD is achieved or exceeded, the next block will be generated by PoS.
TTD success is expected from September 10-20. The first mainnet block produced under the PoS mechanism is predicted to occur approximately 13 minutes after the Paris upgrade.
