The first factory for artificial meat production in China was put into operation by Shanghai-based CellX company. According to the details reflected in the press, the company took an important step towards introducing the artificial meat to the domestic market by putting the country’s first pilot artificial meat production facility into service.
The realized project is seen as an important milestone in the development of the artificial meat industry in China. Cultured meat, also known as artificial meat or laboratory meat, is produced using muscle cells or stem cells from animals without having to kill them.
“The cost of artificial meat in the first phase of production is around $100 per pound. But in two or three years, the price could drop by a factor of 10,” said CellX CEO Ziliang Yang. CellX will need to approach the $2.92 per pound price level to be competitive.
Equipped with a 2,000 liter bioreactor
It should be noted that artificial meat production is seen as a more environmentally friendly and humane way compared to traditional meat production. CellX’s pilot facility will produce up to 1,000 kg of cultured meat per month, allowing the company to test different products and improve production technology.
According to the news served by the South China Morning Post, a 2,000-liter bioreactor has been installed in the factory. From here, artificial meat will be supplied to city restaurants. The main goal is to create a delicious and affordable product that can replace traditional meat in the daily diet of the 1.4 billion Chinese people.
