Epic and Google are sued again

Epic Games, the igniter of Epic vs Apple, one of the most famous lawsuits of recent years, cannot separate its head from legal affairs. The company, which previously sued Google, is now suing Google again.

Epic does not want to give a commission to Google

Epic’s cause of action this time is the Bandcamp application it bought last month. Bandcamp will be removed from Google Play on June 1 for not complying with Google Play rules. Bandcamp is going against Google Play rules because it uses its own payment system instead of Google Play’s payment system. Google wants to get a 30% commission from every sale with the Play Store payment system. Bandcamp currently sells via PayPal. Epic states that it will take an incredible amount of time and effort for them to switch to the Google Play payment system. Epic has therefore taken legal action against Google.

Ethan Diamond, one of the founders of Bandcamp, states that they have been using their own payment system on Android since 2015. However, from June 1, Google will start taking a 30% commission by applying its new rules. It seems that Google has made this commission of 20% for Bandcamp, but the company still does not want to pay a commission. Diamond states that if Google’s rules come true, they will either have to withdraw from Android, they will have to receive commissions from musicians using the platform, or they will not be able to earn money. In addition, Diamond stated that they can pay musicians within 24-48 hours with their own payment system, but this period will be 15-45 days if they switch to the Google Play payment system.

Response from Google was delayed

Google states that this lawsuit by Epic is again invalid and meaningless. According to Google, Epic was aware of the Google Play rules before purchasing Bandcamp, and Bandcamp has been aware of the changed rules for 18 months. In addition, Google stated that Bandcamp has a commission discount and since they are on the Android platform, they can offer the application to their users in an alternative way.
