Every country has different policies and laws. For this reason, in some cases, we may encounter decisions that seem illogical to us, but that they have justified reasons. A new one has been added to these. France has banned the use of English words in the gaming industry. Here is why…

France banned English jargon in the gaming industry

The French Ministry of Culture announced yesterday that it banned the use of English words in the gaming industry. Emphasizing the struggle to preserve the purity of French, the ministry also published the French equivalents of English words frequently used in this field.

The new regulation was published in the country’s official gazette and became mandatory for employees in government agencies. Thus, in France, “joueur professionnel” will be used instead of “pro-gamer” and “joueur-animateur en direct” will be used instead of “streamer”.

In addition, the phrases “jeu video en nuage” for “cloud gaming” and “jeu video de competition” for “e-sports”, which have become widespread in recent years, will be obligatory in France.

As can be seen above, many English words used in the industry have changed to French. It was also compulsory in the first place only for government officials. However, it is not clear for now whether there will be a significant change affecting the general audience in the future.

Another reason for the decision is that people who are not very familiar with games do not understand the related terms. With the new regulation published in the Official Gazette, this problem is expected to end. In fact, the French Ministry of Culture told AFP that the expressions used in the gaming industry are not understood by non-players.
