While the security of our data is one of the biggest security issues of our time, even the messages we send to each other have to be protected in some way. To achieve this, one of the biggest intermediary technologies today is end-to-end encryption. However, while this technology was found in WhatsApp, another messaging application of the same company, Messenger was not ‘literally’ available.

Today, that expected news has finally arrived. In its new announcement, Facebook announced that the long-requested end-to-end encryption feature will be included by default in the Messenger application. The company stated that as of this week, the feature has started to be tested in chats with ‘some people’.

All chats will have end-to-end encryption enabled:

The end-to-end encryption feature was actually available in Messenger until now. But for the feature to be activated, the user had to turn it on himself. Users would only activate this feature in the chats they wanted. From the next days, the feature will be automatically enabled in all chats and it will not be possible to turn it off.

What is this end-to-end encryption?

End-to-end encryption, referred to as end-to-end encryption (E2EE), is a communication system in which Messages are seen only by the sender and receiver. With this feature, this system also prevents even Facebook from seeing your conversations. But at the same time, it also receives reactions from governments, especially due to the inability of law enforcement to reach the messages.
