Grand Theft Auto, or GTA series for short, developed by Rockstar Games, offers players an open world. Players can encounter different mysteries and unexpected events in these open worlds. Finally, another mystery in the game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, or GTA: SA for short, has been solved.

Why did it grow bigger when you shot at the moon in GTA: SA?

As Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas players know, when you shoot the Moon with a gun in the game, its size increases. Why the company added such a feature to the game is one of the topics that has been wondered for years. Fortunately, it looks like this mystery has been solved.


Obbe Vermeij

A developer who worked at Rockstar Games between 1995 and 2009 asked, “Why does it grow when you shoot at the Moon?”, which has been the subject of debate for years. He answered the question. This developer, named Obbe Vermeij, was involved in the development of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which was released in 2004.

According to Obbe Vermeij, the focus was on the Moon during the development of the game. The design team gave it a texture design. The developer did what was requested, providing a night view of the Moon and giving it a reasonable size.

But a few days later, four people from the design team asked him to change the size of the Moon. Vermeij updated the size of the Moon in accordance with his wishes. However, as the process progressed, it turned out that the design team was undecided about the size of the Moon. Two people wanted a small Moon to be more realistic, and the other two wanted a larger Moon to be more cinematic.

After much debate, Vermeij came up with a suggestion: As a solution to determine the size of the Moon, he suggested that its size change when shot at. This way, the team could make decisions more easily.

The design team accepted the suggestion, and Vermeij added a special setting to the sniper gun he was working on at the time. Now, when shot at the Moon, its size changed. It fluctuated in three different sizes with each shot: small, medium and large.

According to the information shared by the developer, the design team did not share their final decisions even after some time, and therefore the feature that changed the size of the Moon with fire remained in the game, that is, it was not removed.

Sharing this exciting mystery with the players, the developer stated in an e-mail from Rockstar North just a few hours later that they wanted all explanations to be removed.
