WinRAR, one of the first applications installed after formatting Windows, has come to the end of the road. At its Build 2023 event, Microsoft announced that Windows 11 will natively support RAR and a host of other archive formats that Windows users have been waiting for years.

Support after decades

“Using the libarchive open source project, we have added native support for additional archive formats, including tar, 7-zip, rar, gz, and more. You can now improve the performance of archive functionality during compression in Windows,” Windows chief Panos Panay said in a statement. He made this historic announcement using his expressions.

Microsoft states that this support will come to Windows 11 with an update in the coming weeks. At the same time, work is being done to support new formats. Either way, adding tar, 7-zip, rar, gz and others is great for Windows 11 users. It will no longer be necessary to install third-party applications to access these files. Hopefully the integration will be slightly better than the native ZIP support.

On the other hand, compression formats such as RAR have been used in Windows for decades. Compressing files was important especially in the 90’s and 2000’s because of the slow internet. However, with the acceleration of the internet and the disappearance of problems such as storage space, the need for applications such as WinRAR and archive formats such as RAR gradually decreased.
