An unexpected ban came to Xiaomi, one of Europe’s best-selling technology brands. Finland’s three major GSM operators announced that they have suspended the sales of Xiaomi smartphones. So why is the Chinese manufacturer being protested in Finland?
Finland’s giant GSM companies suspended Xiaomi phone sales
Three major Finnish mobile operator companies started boycotting Xiaomi. The reason given was that it continued to sell to Russia during the occupation of Ukraine. GSM operators said that all companies withdrew from Russia and expressed concern that Xiaomi would remain in the background in this regard.
Finland’s three largest operators, Telia, DNA and Elisa, think that Xiaomi does not comply with Europe’s strategic decisions. These companies will no longer sell new Xiaomi devices in their stores. Once the current stocks are exhausted, Xiaomi phones will not be renewed.
Speaking on the issue, DNA CEO Sami Aavikko stated that they were not satisfied with Xiaomi’s attitude towards Russia. Another company, Elisa, will narrow the range of Xiaomi products it offers for sale.
However, it should be noted that Xiaomi can continue to sell both officially and through distributors. Since there is no official ban from the Finnish government, the company’s activities in the country will continue.
Making a statement on the issue, two retail companies stated that they will continue to sell Xiaomi phones “for now” since there is no EU-wide ban. Let us remind you that there is no official statement from Xiaomi yet after the ban of GSM operators.
