Despite the great controversy it has caused over the past few months, it turns out that very few of Twitter’s active global users pay for Twitter Blue.

Twitter-like apps haven’t been looking too well lately. The wave of controversy since billionaire Tesla CEO Elon Musk bought Twitter in October has caused a huge drop in user numbers. What’s worse for Twitter and Musk is that very few people seem willing to pay for Twitter’s features like the blue tick.

While some users are moving to decentralized alternatives such as Mastodon, the latest figures from this application show that Twitter has lost users to Mastodon, its direct competitor.

As of mid-January, only 0.2% of monthly users in the US, or about 180,000 people, signed up for Twitter Blue, The Information reported, citing an internal document leaked on Tuesday. The $8 per month service gives users the ability to undo and edit tweets, read threads in a long format, see half of the ads other users see, and a few other customizations.

When calculated, the global use of Twitter Blue brings the company just over $2.3 million per month, or just $27.8 million in annual revenue. In other words, this feature generates an insignificant amount. Last month, the Wall Street Journal reported that Musk was talking about selling shares to help pay off $3 billion in debt.
